How You Can Help

A call came into the Rescue. A four year old Andalusian stallion was going to be loaded onto a truck and taken to the slaughterhouse. Simple as that and as terrifying as that. His short life would be ending in a brutal way.

Sega

This stallion had been born, raised and kept for breeding on an animal farm that fed only outdated food from local stores. His diet, we were told, consisted of Tofu and wheat bread.
We made the trip to pick him up. When we arrived we became aware that he was also completely blind in one eye. He had no name. He was led onto our trailer without a bit of trouble by Betsy Johnson, president of this Rescue. She has a way about her that allows horses to put their trust in her; he knew he would be safe. His temperament was soft and willing.
Sega was moving on to a better life and somehow he sensed that.

Betsy & Sega

Recently, Sega had developed an illness that the local veterinarian could not diagnose. Tests were run and everything at the vets disposal was used to see if we could treat whatever this was here at home. He was not looking very well and his condition became critical in a short amount of time; Sega would die if action was not immediately taken. The decision was made to bring him to Myhre Equine Clinic in Rochester, New Hampshire. We have great respect for the staff at this Clinic, Sega was treated with the best round-the-clock care for 8 days. There were several times that it was touch and go but the vet there was optimistic about his future. On the 9th day Sega came back into the Rescue and he was as "good as new" he has completely recuperated from this illness which was diagnosed as Enteritis. The Myhre Clinic had succeeded in his treatment and given the rescue a substantial discount.
The bill, however, is still substantial for his stay.

Sega has been here for almost a year, he was gelded as soon as his health allowed. Sega has recuperated from malnutrition, the fact that he had lost his eyesight was attributed to his former poor diet. Sega still needs further surgery to remove his eye, a costly procedure. Sega's bills will be over $5000.

Sega, noble & trusting
